farnsworth hosting server restarted

The “farnsworth” server was restarted at 11:45 PM Pacific time tonight, causing a brief 2 minute interruption in Web and e-mail service for customers on that server. Incoming mail was queued and delivered after the interruption.

We apologize for the lack of advance notice. That server has been experiencing a “memory leak” bug in Linux kernel 2.6.24 that’s fixed by the newer kernel 2.6.26 that we’re slowly rolling out to all servers. We planned to restart it with the newer kernel during a future scheduled maintenance period, but for some reason the memory leak became more significant today. We decided to complete the upgrade immediately to avoid any outage during busier hours.
