All Web sites on the “farnsworth” Web server have been moved to a new server named “zapp”.
This change was made for reliability; our monitoring systems detected potential hardware problems with the “farnsworth” server earlier today, and the sites were moved so it can be replaced before it causes any problems.
This doesn’t cause any downtime, and customers shouldn’t notice any change — but as always, don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
Between 11:00 PM and 11:59 PM Pacific time tonight (Monday August 2), several of our hosting servers will be restarted: bender, elzar, farnsworth, lrrr, mom, and seymour.
As a result, Web site service and the ability to read incoming e-mail for some customers will be unavailable for approximately five minutes at some point during this maintenance “window”.

The “farnsworth” server was restarted at 11:45 PM Pacific time tonight, causing a brief 2 minute interruption in Web and e-mail service for customers on that server. Incoming mail was queued and delivered after the interruption.

At approximately 11:00 PM Pacific time on Saturday, January 31, all of our Web hosting servers (except the “hypnotoad” and “mom” servers) will be restarted. As a result, Web site and e-mail service for some customers will be unavailable for approximately five minutes.
No e-mail will be lost, of course; incoming mail will just be delayed for a few minutes.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. This maintenance is necessary to install an updated “kernel” on our servers, as described in an earlier maintenance announcement.
Update: the maintenance was successfully completed on all servers with less than 5 minutes of “downtime”.
At 11:00 PM Pacific time tonight (November 24), the “elzar” and “farnsworth” servers will be restarted. As a result, Web sites and e-mail service for customers using those servers will be unavailable for approximately five minutes.

The network interface on the “farnsworth” Web server stopped responding at 6:38 AM Pacific time today, and the server needed to be manually restarted by our data center staff. The server was unavailable for 17 minutes, causing an interruption of service for Web sites on that server. It also prevented users of that server from reading incoming e-mail (such e-mail was delayed and delivered after the outage).
Other servers were not affected.
We sincerely apologize to anyone affected by this problem.
The “farnsworth” Apache Web server had an outage lasting approximately five minutes at 11:36 AM Pacific time today, resulting in an interruption of service for Web sites and e-mail on that server. Other servers were not affected.
The problem occurred when the Apache web server process failed to gracefully restart when a new SSL certificate was added. We have discovered why this happened and will take steps to prevent it in the future.
We sincerely apologize to anyone affected by this.
Update: We have added a new automated step to our certificate installation process that checks for problems with SSL certificates, guaranteeing that this problem will not recur.
The “farnsworth” and “lrrr” Web hosting servers will be restarted at approximately 11:00 PM Pacific time on Saturday October 13, and customer Web sites on those two servers will be unavailable for approximately five minutes. (See “Which server is my account on?” if you aren’t sure.) E-mail service, and customers on all other Web servers, will not be affected at all.
The restart is necessary so we can increase the memory (RAM) on those two servers to 4 GB, as we described here. After this, all our hosting servers will have 4 GB of memory.
By comparison with many other reasonably priced hosting companies, we keep the load on our servers pretty low to start with, so 4 GB is “overkill” probably 99.99% of the time — but we want to cover the other .01%. (Our unofficial motto should probably be something like “Tiger Technologies: We’re paranoid so you don’t have to be.”)
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
Update: Note that the maintenance time has been changed from 10:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
The “farnsworth” Web server locked up and needed restarting again last night at about 9:04 PM Pacific time, causing another short outage for some customers. (A similar problem happened Monday night.) To make sure this doesn’t happen again, we’ll be replacing the entire server (switching it with a spare server) at about 11 PM (Pacific) tonight, which will result in about 5 minutes of downtime.
We’re also taking this opportunity to upgrade the hardware on one of our mail servers to allow for future growth; customers (even those with accounts on other Web servers besides the farnsworth server) may see a short (approximately 5 minute) interruption in their ability to retrieve e-mail between 11 PM and midnight.
We apologize for any inconvenience this causes — as always, we’re committed to the highest possible levels of reliability.
One of our Web servers (the “farnsworth” server) stopped responding at 7:07 PM Pacific time today, and needed to be forcibly restarted. This resulted in a Web server and FTP server outage of about 15 minutes for some customers, although most sites were unaffected.
After being restarted, the server is responding properly, but still showing a problem with one of the disks in its RAID array. Because of that, we plan to replace the disk to prevent future problems, meaning we’ll restart that server again later tonight (after 11 PM Pacific time).
We apologize to all customers affected; we strive hard to avoid this kind of problem.
