web14 server database problem February 25, 2016 (resolved)

The MySQL database software on the “web14” server started becoming intermittently unstable at 4:29 PM (Pacific time). Web sites that use a database (such as WordPress sites) may have experienced problems until the problem was fixed at 5:03 PM.

We’ve traced the cause to a customer who inadvertently placed a very high load on the database server, running unusual commands on a multi-gigabyte table with millions of rows. We helped the customer modify the table to ensure it won’t happen again.

We always do our best to avoid any interruptions to our service, and we apologize to our customers for the inconvenience caused by this event.
