9:54 AM Pacific time January 10: We’re receiving scattered reports of intermittent problems when connecting to our servers, although all services on our end are working normally.

It appears that a major network backbone company that delivers some traffic to our servers, Cogent Communications, is experiencing high “packet loss” on some Oakland and San Jose routers physically near our data center. This means connections appear slow or even “timeout” for some people, although most people aren’t affected because their traffic doesn’t go through these Cogent routers.

Cogent Communications has been completely disabled in both our incoming and outgoing networks to minimize the impact. However, some other companies that your data might pass through on the way to or from our network also use Cogent, so there may still be some effects. Cogent is aware of the issue and is working to resolve it.

We’ll update this post when we have more information.
