Price change in October 2023

Effective October 1, 2023, the price of our “Silver Hosting” and “Basic Hosting” plans for existing customers will increase by $2.00 per month, and the “Plus Hosting” plan will increase by $1.00 per month. The prices for “Business Hosting” and “Add-On Hosting” will not change.

At the same time, we’ll double the amount of disk space for each of these plans: Silver Hosting will increase from 15 to 30 GB; Basic Hosting will increase from 20 GB to 40 GB; Plus Hosting will increase from 30 GB to 60 GB, and Business Hosting will increase from 50 GB to 100 GB.

New customers are already paying the new rates, as shown on our plans page.

This won’t affect all customers immediately. If you prepay annually for hosting, the price change won’t take effect until your current prepayment is used up, which will be sometime between October 2023 and September 2024. In addition, if you’ve opened an account with us in the last two years, the price increase won’t take effect until you’ve been with us a full two years, even if you’re paying month-to-month.

We’ll directly notify each affected customer by e-mail before any price increase takes effect, of course.

Python 2 deprecated; Python 3 soon to be updated from 3.7 to 3.9

As of today, we’re no longer recommending or supporting the obsolete Python 2 program on our servers. (Python is a scripting language; if you don’t know what that means, your site is unlikely to affected by this and you can ignore it.)

Python 2 will remain installed on our servers for one more year until June 1, 2024, but anyone using Python 2 should switch to Python 3 now. Python 3 has been available on our servers for several years, and most customers who use Python have already switched to it. If you’re still using Python 2 next year, we’ll send you extra reminders before we remove it.

PHP version 8.1.18

The PHP developers recently released version 8.1.18 that fixes several bugs. We’ve upgraded the PHP 8.1 series on our servers as a result.

PHP version 8.2.5

We’ve added support for the PHP 8.2 series for our hosting customers, and you can now select it in the My Account control panel.

We always recommend using the most recent PHP version that’s compatible with your scripts (we’re using PHP 8.2 on this blog, for example) — but if you try a new version and you have any problems, you can instantly switch back to the older version. We currently support PHP 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 7.4, 8.0, 8.1, and 8.2.

Older PHP versions 5.5, 5.6, and 7.0 are still available on the servers, but are no longer supported and can’t be chosen by customers who are already using a newer version. You should update if you’re using one of those (you’ll get nagging email messages from us about it).

As always, don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any trouble.

It’s World Backup Day! How do we protect your data?

Today is World Backup Day! If you’re not backing up your own computer and devices, today’s the perfect day to start doing it; that page has advice.

Do you ever wonder how companies like ours handle backups? It’s a good question. Our customers trust us with lots of data — email, websites, and more. It’s important that we keep that data (and our own data) safe. We do that with a 4-3-2-1 backup policy:

  • There are always at least 4 copies of the data;
  • The data is stored on at least 3 different physical servers;
  • The servers are in at least 2 separate physical locations;
  • At least 1 copy of the data is always physically disconnected from power and the Internet (“air gapped”).
