Since about 9:00 AM (Pacific time) this morning, we’ve been seeing network routing problems to some destinations on the Internet that use the “xo.net” backbone. For some customers, this will have the effect of making any access to your web site extremely slow — it may even be so slow as to seem completely non-responsive. Most customers will have no problems.
Our data center technicians are working on this problem. We’ll update this post as soon as the issue is resolved.
Update: This issue was resolved at approximately 10:20 AM, and all systems are operating normally.
Starting around 9:03 PM (Pacific time) tonight, our elzar server had an extremely high load placed upon it. The result was that many users may have had problems connecting to Web sites running on elzar. The problem occurred intermittently for about 30 minutes, at which point we managed to restore normal service.
Please be assured that we do our best to make sure that our server loads always stay within reasonable limits to avoid just this kind of problem. The load spike was unexpected and was well outside of the generous safety limits that we keep on each server. We will continue to monitor the situation, and will take corrective or preventive action if appropriate. We appreciate your business, and apologize for any inconvenience.
Our business offices will be closed on Wednesday, July 4 to observe the US legal holiday. As always, we’ll provide same-day support for time-sensitive issues via our ticket and e-mail systems. However, questions that aren’t time-sensitive (including most billing matters) may not be answered until the next day, and telephone support (via callbacks) will be available only for urgent problems.
Between 4:33 and 4:41 PM Pacific time, we experienced a short-lived problem where users who reach our servers via an “Internet backbone” called Global Crossing (including Comcast and Charter cable customers) were unable to connect. Other users weren’t affected.
The problem lasted for less than ten minutes, and everything is now operating normally.
We have installed Midnight Commander on all of our servers. Midnight Commander is a file manager program which runs in a shell window and lets you manage the files on your Web site. Midnight Commander splits the screen in two, letting you select different directories on each side. You can then move, copy, and rename files and directories, and perform many other operations.
Midnight Commander is designed for users who connect to the shell but may not be fully comfortable with typing commands on the command line.

We’re happy to announce that the monthly bandwidth allowance for all Web hosting plans has been at least doubled — at no additional cost. (Bandwidth is simply how much data your Web site sends to visitors. As your Web site gets larger or becomes more popular, bandwidth usage increases.)
The Web hosting plans have had their bandwidth increased as follows:
- Silver plan: increased from 100GB to 250GB per month
- Gold plan: increased from 200GB to 500GB per month
- Platinum plan: increased from 500GB to 1TB per month
This change is effective immediately (in fact, it’ll be applied retroactively to the start of June).
Our pricing remains the same. We’re glad to be able to help you grow your sites without extra fees!
Our business offices will be closed on Monday, May 28 to observe the US legal holiday. As always, we’ll provide same-day support for time-sensitive issues via our ticket and e-mail systems. However, questions that aren’t time-sensitive (including most billing matters) may not be answered until May 29, and telephone support (via callbacks) will be available only for urgent problems.
We had an interesting support phone call today from a customer who was having trouble sending and receiving e-mail. She was using a wireless connection today. She had also been using a wireless connection yesterday, and it had been working fine then. Before calling us she had tried restarting her computer (as we recommend for most e-mail problems), but that didn’t seem to fix the problem.
