Brief outage on web07 server Feb 7 2018 (resolved)

Between 04:23 AM Pacific time (February 7 2018) and 04:33 AM Pacific time (February 7 2018), websites on our “web07” server were inaccessible while we restarted the server due to an unexpected kernel software issue.

All services are now running normally, and we are investigating the initial cause of the problem. We apologize for the inconvenience this caused.

Web02 RAID and MySQL problems (resolved)

Between 05:46 AM Pacific time and 06:58 AM Pacific time (December 29 2017) some Web sites on our web02 server were inaccessible. This was caused by the failure of a disk in the RAID array. When the disk failed MySQL continued to read corrupted data from it’s file cache rather than using another disk in the RAID array. The cache has now been cleared and the server restarted. This was unrelated to the problems on our web13 server earlier in the day.

Elzar server temporarily unavailable (resolved)

The “elzar” Web server experienced high load between 5.40 and 6.00 AM Pacific time this morning, April 15. This resulted in slow Web sites and some interruption of service. (Some e-mail activity was delayed, but no e-mail was lost.)

We sincerely apologize for this problem. We consider this type of failure to be unacceptable, and are looking into the cause of the problem so that we can take the appropriate steps to prevent it from happening again.

We sincerely apologize for this problem. We consider this type of failure to be unacceptable, and are looking into the cause of the problem so that we can take the appropriate steps to prevent it from happening again.

Farnsworth server restarted (resolved)

The network interface on the “farnsworth” Web server stopped responding at 6:38 AM Pacific time today, and the server needed to be manually restarted by our data center staff. The server was unavailable for 17 minutes, causing an interruption of service for Web sites on that server. It also prevented users of that server from reading incoming e-mail (such e-mail was delayed and delivered after the outage).

Other servers were not affected.

We sincerely apologize to anyone affected by this problem.

Advantages of e-mail mailboxes over forwarding addresses

One of the features of our e-mail service is the ability to create e-mail forwarding aliases to forward messages from an address at your new Web site to existing e-mail account (AOL, Hotmail etc…). This is a useful feature if you need to receive e-mail from your new Web site and need to get it going quickly.

However, in the long term it’s better to use mailboxes on our servers (referred to as “POP mailboxes” on our setup screens, although they can also be accessed by IMAP or Webmail). In fact, one of the biggest advantages of having your own Web site and domain name is that you own it and all of its e-mail addresses. From our experience this is much better than being at the whim of a company that’s almost impossible to contact if you have trouble.
